Understand the Different Types of Bets

Before placing a wager it’s important for a bettor to know the options available to them. One single game might have numerous ways to win money on it including:

Straight Bet – The oddsmakers set the point spread and gamblers can either choose to go for or against that number. If a team is listed as -5.5 favorites, a 6 point win is a successful bet but a 4 point win is a loss in the gambling world. Betting on an underdog can result in money won, even if the team loses as long as it’s by few enough points.

Totals Bet – Oddsmakers also include a number that they think both teams will combine to score during the game. Wagers can be made that the score either goes over that number or under it to cash in on a total bet.

Moneyline Bet – Some bettors would consider these an easier wager to make because all that’s needed is to pick the winner of the game without a point spread but moneyline wagers are also very risky. If a team is heavily favored oddsmakers will cover their money by making the team something like a -550 moneyline favorite. This means that a gambler must risk $550 just to try and win $100. Once again finding an underdog is key because that same $100 bet could win $300 or $400 on the opposite team.

NFL Parlay Bets – A single wager can be hard enough to win but picking two or three winners or more in a parlay bet could have huge payoffs. Parlays can include 2 to 15 teams with the more involved the higher the payout. These wagers are just the tip of the iceberg for the upcoming football season. Bets can be made on a per quarter basis for both point spreads and totals. Prop bets can be wagered on which team scores first in a game, which player has more yards in a head to head matchup, and dozens of other bets in a single game.
